Julia A. Maki joined the Navy back in 1997 into a combat aviation position that had been newly opened to women.  This year she released her memoir, What They Don’t Teach You in Deer River, which is full of stories and accounts from the day she left for boot camp, until they day she was discharged from the military at the end of her service.
